Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved participating in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on poker.
The real advancement in his skills began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking skills. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
