Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked playing various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he might better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on poker.
The definite advancement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly compete against each other. Howard was able to access some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker arena ever. Howard headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
