Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he liked betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and fail to win most times. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he possibly could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus more on the game.
The real improvement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking skills. He used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
